Why is Temp-A-Start a better choice than an APU solution?

Temp-A-Start works with your truck engine, not in addition to it.
You don’t need another separate engine on your truck to address idle-reduction and driver comfort.  Why haul 600-800 pounds of an APU (auxiliary powered unity) on the side of your truck, which is another engine you must maintain?  Temp-A-Start weighs just 5 pounds and is not a separate engine.  It works with your truck engine, not in addition to it.

An APU costs more to buy and maintain.
An APU, usually a genset diesel-powered unit, is not necessarily the best economical or environmental solution.  Contrary to what you might believe, an APU doesn’t leave less of an imprint on the environment when you consider the big picture.  And an APU costs more – up to three times more – to buy and maintain.

Battery-powered APU solutions fail in extreme weather.
Battery-powered solutions contain many of the same disadvantages as a genset-diesel-powered unit.  Batteries are very heavy to haul around 100% of the time, especially when they are only needed perhaps 10% of the time.  It is a well-known fact that batteries do not work well in extreme weather, eventually draining and weakening until they can no longer perform.  Hotel loads put a huge electrical drain on any battery if the truck engine is not running.

Cold starts create the greatest amount of emissions.
The greatest benefit with Temp-A-Start is avoiding “cold starts” with your truck engine.  Cold starts create the greatest amount of emissions into the atmosphere, when it comes right down to it.  Diesel engines start best when the risk of fuel gelling and battery charging is diminished. So the best idle-reduction solution is one that keeps the engine from never getting cold.  Always a fast start with Temp-A-Start.
